Terrorist Scumbaggery

So they busted the terrorist who tried to blow up New York's Times Square. Normally I reserve comment of such issues, but this one has particular interest to me, since I was deep in enemy territory at the time and in Times Square (not many blocks away) from where the aforementioned scumbag tried to blow his half-assed carbomb up.

Luckily it did not go off, and I was out of the area shortly thereafter, but it does raise a good question: when you hear that big BOOM what will you do?

If I were with family or friends who needed protection, the answer is short and sweet, find that nearest exit (you WERE looking for those nearest exits right?) get out of Dodge, be a good witness, and help anyone you can.

If you're alone though, should one run towards the blast or away? I would say it depends on your first aid skills (you DID get that training right?) or your physical skills (can you haul a casualty away on your back at a run? if not why not). Overseas, many bombings also included secondary bombs to kill first responders, which might end up hitting you if you run towards the sound of the blast.

Nothing we do here can tell you what to do in this situation, but mentally preparing for something like this might put you ahead of the curve, and let you survive to save yourself and your fellows.

Stay Safe.

Great Water Crisis of 2010 or "ARGH! BOIL EVERYTHING!"

So like many of the folks here in Eastern Massachusettsastan we here in the RFW bunker were faced with the "boil water order" issued from the MWRA. Having spent some time working in the water supply industry I know the extent to which these things can go bad, and that there are some really good folks out there making that tap run.

On the other hand, having spent time working in municipal water supply... I have several 35 gallon barrels of purified water in the basement. When the boil order came down, I was out of town. When I got home I promptly grabbed my brew kettle, probably a 15 gallon pot, and boiled the heck out of it. That kept me and the TAKC (Tactical Assault Kitty Cat) in clean water for a few days. Having grown up drinking out of local ponds and streams (the Saugus River has a particularly odd taste) I was not overly concerned with the chance of some bugs in the water that my insane immune system couldn't kill.

The boil water order did get me thinking though, what would I do differently if the water were REALLY bad. Number one, I should have some bottled water (although I usually hate the stuff, as a big fan of Nalgene bottles and purifiers). Having potable portable water is key for a minor disruption like this. Also, I need smaller water canisters. My 35 gallon barrels just wont make it to the crows nest in the bunker to keep me and the TAKC hydrated. I hear Wally World has 7 gallon canisters cheap... Might need to brave a trip there.

Further, I really need to get on getting a camping water filter. I have boiled water in mock "survival" situations to clean it, but that was always just for practice. Doing it for real let me realize one thing.... its a BITCH. Getting a good camping filter would make a lot of things easier, especially for... camping. Oh and SHTF too.

Bottom line, its just another case of me being more right than I thought I was. As more than one person commented, "I have this friend who has barrels of clean water in his basement. Everyone laughed at him... Until today!"

Local Holiday Formerly Known as Patriot's Day

Well, we just passed over the Local Holiday Formerly Known as Patriot's Day, the day that commemorates the battle, the "shot heard 'round the world", the birth of liberty as we know it.

These days those "dead white men" are probably considered evil, because they were after all using GUNS, evil tools of sedition against those loving British peacekeepers. In fact, if you count the Hessian mercenaries, the British force was a "multinational peacekeeping force". If only the British had disarmed those seditious bastards.... oh wait, thats what this was all about. The British heard that the Patriots were stockpiling weapons. Not just any weapons, Brown Bess pattern muskets, or in the modern nomenclature, "assault weapons". Yes, these were civilian versions of military weapons, stockpiled in Lexington in case of a repressive government. Our ancient brethren long ago established that stockpile to keep themselves free.

This is a longwinded way to ask a simple question: where is your Brown Bess? Where is your "assault rifle"? If it was good enough for our forefathers to keep a weapon handy for the defense of hearth and home, and to keep yourself fed if need be, why not you. I assume that most of the folks reading this blog are better armed than the average third world army, but if not, I ask you, why not?

Should we not be able to defend ourselves? As I sit here I have a 3 foot stick handy, useful for any number of things, but a very good defensive tool. However, what if we see what happened in New Orleans (and to no fault of the federal government, more on that later) that stick which is a great tool to defend my living room might not be effective to keep off a band of 30 guys trying to storm my house and take my resources. So perhaps I need a firearm?

My first choice for those who do not have a firearm (and why don't you) would be a cheap very controllable and easy to learn .38 or .357 revolver. Failing that, I'd go with a 9mm handgun. Both have cheap ammo and are easy to learn to shoot well. Once you have a home defense, last ditch gun, go out and buy two more guns, a .22 rifle and a .22 handgun. I recommend the Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60 for the rifle, and by far the Ruger series of .22 autos for the handgun. A serious caliber rifle is the next to buy, I recommend the M-4 or AR-15 series, a common design in wide acceptance in the U.S. and very effective for what they do. Once you get these guns, train and practice like crazy. Train, train, train. Learn to work your weapon so well that you can not possibly fail. Our ancient brethren had this competence in their tools and their weapons, and look what happened.

Shoot straight and speak the truth boys.

The "Meatball"

Back in WW2 our vets used to call the big red ball on the side of the Jap planes "meatballs".

In this day of Toyota's being recalled for killing people left and right, I think we need to reconsider "the meatball".

Consider the ACOG and he EoTech combat sights that are now standard equipment for our military around the world: Our people got so used to shooting at big red dots that now our military sights project them on our dirka enemies.

Shoot Straight boys.

Victory!

As much as I did not believe it, as much as I could not believe it, Scott Brown drove his truck right through the Demoncrat party machine and knocked Barry O's healthcare plan off the rails. There's not much that I can say that hasn't been said before, all I will say is thanks to those who we pestered to get out to vote who fired another "shot heard 'round the world".
